A couple things that have me frothing at the mouth...

1) I'm so tired of Clinton complaining that she isn't being treated fairly and that the public/media/everyone likes Obama. It's the same victim crap she pulled in NY when she ran for senate. "They're picking on me!" No one forced you to run for president. You know what my response to your whines are, lady? Welcome to the big league. Time to cowboy up and put on some pads. No one else is crying/whining/etc. Maybe you should think about that. Maybe you aren't cut out for this game and when that red phone rings, maybe you aren't ready to pick it up.

2) Double standards. Clinton cries and she gets a bump. What the hell is that? If Obama cried, he'd be the laughing stock of the country. And how is it that she can cry one day, and then claim she's tough and can be the commander and chief on the next day? Am I the only one who thinks that a sobbing head-of-state doesn't exactly send the right message to Kim Jong Il and friends? Once again, it's time to cowboy up and act like a presidential candidate.

3) AND MOST IMPORTANTLY! Much like Bush, Clinton is also endorsing McCain. Has she lost her damn mind? She's engaged in a love-fest with the GOP and attacking the front-runner of her own party?!?

"I think it's imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold," the New York senator told reporters crowded into an infant's bedroom-sized hotel conference room in Washington.

"I believe that I've done that. Certainly, Sen. McCain has done that and you'll have to ask Sen. Obama with respect to his candidacy," she said.

Calling McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee a good friend and a "distinguished man with a great history of service to our country," Clinton said, "Both of us will be on that stage having crossed that threshold. That is a critical criterion for the next Democratic nominee to deal with."

I hope this bullshit will backfire on her.

>:(

At least there is this. I think I'll donate to Obama again.

By the way, I was in a conference call with Obama yesterday morning because of my firm's affiliation with the AAJ. I didn't have any questions to ask him, so I kept the phone on mute and didn't ask the moderator for the chance to have input, but it was pretty awesome just to be a part of it. He spoke a lot about the direction he'd like to see civil litigation go. He also gave us a few hints as to what is coming. It was a pretty cool day.

Today, I have a conference call with Clinton. I'll try to keep my cool and not ask her baiting questions about 527's. I think my firm would frown upon it.

The most significant post I've ever made.

So Turkey Day was spent first with Melissa's family and then with mine. It was a pretty good day, all things considered. The most important thing that happened was that while Melissa and her mom were distracted I pulled her Dad aside and talked to him.

Lemme tell you, that had to be hands down the most nerve wracking conversation of my life. And I know he knew what I was going to say but he sat there and eye-balled me and made me say it. Fair play, I would have done the same thing. It was a kind of "Ok kid, do you have the stones to do this?" situation. Heh.

And what sucked was the second I said "Hey Dell, do you have a minute?" I knew I was commited. I didn't have any backup discussions in case I chickened out. He just turned around and stared at me and in my head I basically had the following internal monologue.

"Oh god... here we go... fuck... you know maybe this is bad timing and I should have done it another day... but he's expecting to hear me say SOMETHING and I cant just sit here silently... I better just do it... did I just tell him that I have a good and stable job BEFORE I mentioned that Melissa and I are happy together? ... Oh this is not going to end well..."

But anyway, after fumbling and stuff I finally managed to ask permission. He gave his blessing and said I'd make a good addition to the family. We chuckled a little bit about how that was the most awkward discussion I've ever had, and then I asked him to keep our conversation between us because I didn't want Melissa to know for sure. You know, to maintain at least some of the surprise. He asked if I was sure she was going to say yes. Not wanting to take anything for granted, or to jinx anything, I said "God, I hope so." He agreed to keep our conversation between us.

Well, that lasted for about 30 seconds. I cannot... CANNOT... keep a secret from that woman. I saw her and spilled immediately and was kinda giddy about it. Heh.

So there you have it. It's probably the biggest news I've ever posted on LJ.

I don't think the President is really against the Child Health Care Bill. I suspect the theory here is that he'll veto it, Dems and Repubs will override it, and then during the election the Republicans will crow loudly about how they stood up to Bush and passed important legislation (thereby deflecting attention from the fact that they're are lapdogs).

Question

Amid all the frothy screaming regarding the Moveon.org ad about Gen. Petraeus and Democratic senators questioning the truth of his statements, I think something is being lost.

Isn't that the point of these inquiries? To listen to his testimony, weigh it, and find an outcome? And in weighing it, aren't they supposed to determine whether they believe it?

When is this country going to stop being sheep who baaa on command when the Republicans scream "honor" and "patriot" with righteous indignation anytime there is any suggestion that they are not messianic and perfect?

Questioning is a GOOD thing. How the hell did we get to the point where things are so totalitarian and fascist that the military is given a God-Like status of being always truthful and honorable? How did we get to such a point where asking questions are seen as unpatriotic?

And, while we're on the subject, where the fuck are the Democrats on this? They should be hammering the Republicans for their hypocritical stance. I realize that the so-called "liberal media" is about as liberal as Guiliani (kinda in certain ways, but not really) but this is news... and facts... and shouldn't they be covering it? Has it gotten to such a point where the media only attacks the left because that's what gets ratings and profit?

The Democrats should be crucifying the right for their stance. They should be using Boehner's comments about how soldier's lives are a "small price to pay" to force the nails in deeper. They should be proposing bills to end the war every week and then publishing the names of EVERYONE who votes against it. They should be doing something... anything. Christ, I hate to say it but even the Green Party is better organized than the Dems. Hell, your average book club is more politically savy than the Democratic party at this point. What the hell are they doing?

Fuck that, what the hell is happening to this country?

Joele: You know, I'm getting really tired of the "cool" diseases getting all the attention and parades. What about the uncool diseases? Steve has Croen's disease. Sure, it won't kill him but it affects every aspect of his life and will do so for the rest of his life.
Me: Yeah, chronic illness is far reaching.
Joele: That's what I'm saying. Like your back, that's a serious issue but you won't see anyone doing an organized Walk for it.
Me: ... Yeah, it's lead to extreme sleep deprivation, loss of energy, intense pain, and tons of depression. Where's my ribbon?
Joele: Exactly. There should be something for uncool diseases.
Me: Hah, like a "Live Strong" bracelet.
Joele: Yeah, but it would say "Uncool disease."
Me: "Live Strong...
The Dog

Kerouac has a black growth on his knee-pit and one on his gums. He also had some blood from either in or around his butt.

So I took him to the vet. They want to chop off the growths and I'm to give him meds for the butt-blood just in case he has some sort of GI irritation.

So he's ok, he's just old and expensive. I'll be picking him up at lunch and taking him home (which I'm sure he'll appreciate). Then we'll make an appointment for his surgery.

Whee.

An Open Letter to Hollywood

Dead Hollywood Film Industry,

Please stop spreading ignorance and stupidity amongst the masses by butchering famous legends and historical tales. I realize you want to put a "hip new spin" on things, but some stories should be told properly and history should never be revised.

The Last Legion is the latest in a host of films that misunderstand the legend of Arthur. And what about the Last Legion? It's a neat story but he's a problem for you... we know that Legio IX left Britania and went to inner Germania before it disappeared. And not only that, but it even screws up the legend of its main character "Little Augustus." Romulus Augustus did not rule for one day, as the film makers claim. He ruled for about a year. But really... why are you even bothering to include him?

Let me break this down for you. Arthur is a Welsh legend. There are theories that Arthur may have been a foreigner, but they're hardly conclusive. An yet every film about my people's legend has made him either English or Roman. What the hell? It's like Zulu, a film about 150 Welsh builders at Rorke's Drift defeating the Zulu army, starred entirely Englishmen except for a couple random Taffy's that got cameos just to make jokes about how we all have the same last name and are country bumpkins. It's bollocks and racist.

But back the subject of this letter. If you're going to do Arthur, and are going to fill it with foreigners, at least do it right. Follow the legend. Don't butcher it like the last Arthur movie and make Gwenhyfar wear pictish body paint like a poor man's Boudica.

While we're on the subject, if you're going to do a Homeric epic don't forget the Gods. And if you don't know what movie I'm talking about either you're very lucky because you never saw it, or your high school english teacher needs to be beaten and you need to read the Illiad.

And if you're going to do a historical film, don't forget... you know... history. Thermopylae was not like a video game complete with boss fights and mutants. In fact, the real story is much more engaging than naked shaved guys fighting bosses from a Final Fantasy game.

What's next? A musical about Gilgamesh where he goes under the sea with his fish friends and they meet up with the Little Mermaid? How about a movie about Caesar where he wasn't a dictator and didn't get killed, but rather was a lovable leader that died of old age (because the "downer" ending didn't test well)? Oooo or how about the colonization of America where it is devoid of human life and everyone survives (ignore Jamestown and Roanoke)... wait... they've already done that story. The called it High School Text Books. Come on, it's really getting out of control.

I realize you're going to fill any story with shlock and "Tell my kids *cough cough* that I love them and not to be scared *die*" crap... but at least get the story right. Do your research! Hell, if the concept of reading a book without pictures scares you, at least do a search on Wiki. It'll give you a cliff's notes version and it often has pictures for you to blankly stare at.

Just stop butchering legends and history. Please. Stop. You're making America stupid. Well... more stupid.

XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX

- Inevitability

P.S. Don't think this is a problem? Watch a film made about the most fascinating character in history. Someone who's name is instantly recognizable. I'm speaking, of course, about Alexander the Great. Watch "Alexander" and tell me that I'm wrong.
